Common menopause FAQs
What are the stages of menopause and how do I tell which stage I am in?
There are three stages of menopause: perimenopause, menopause, and postmenopause.
Perimenopause is the stage before your period stops. If you are in perimenopause, you might notice your periods becoming irregular, and you might experience other symptoms of perimenopause, like hot flushes and mood swings.
Menopause is the word we use to describe the moment in time when you haven’t had a period for twelve months. The menopause stage itself only lasts a day. After that, you’re in postmenopause, and that's the stage where you’ll stay for the rest of your life.
You’ll fill out our symptom checker and we’ll discuss what stage of menopause you’re in at your initial appointment.
What is the average age of menopause?
In Aotearoa New Zealand, the average age of menopause is 51. Most people experience the stages of menopause between the ages of 45 and 55, but some people experience menopause earlier.
What care or treatment do I need in menopause?
Everyone is different, and we’ll work with you to find the best treatment for your symptoms. For most people, hormone therapy is most effective. If that’s not right for you, we can consider other prescribable medications to treat your symptoms and can advise on lifestyle changes.
