Supply issues with progesterone capsules and some Oestradiol patches

News

As reported on RNZ, Pharmac is temporarily rationing some forms of hormone therapy. This applies to progesterone capsules and some strengths of Oestriadol patches.

Pharmac's director of pharmaceuticals, Adrienne Martin, told Morning Report that increased demand for products, combined with temperature issues, had resulted in global supply issues.

Advice from Menopause Wellbeing

As prescribers, we are aware of the supply issue with progesterone capsules which are prescribed under the name Utrogestan.

We will continue to prescribe three-month supplies of Utrogestan but clients need to be aware that until the supply issue is resolved, pharmacists will dispense one month supplies only.

We recommend that you:

  • Continue to take the Utrogestan as prescribed by your health provider

  • Talk with your pharmacist about their dispensing procedure

  • Sign up for a text reminder from your pharmacy when your prescription is due for refilling – this may be a helpful reminder for you to pick up another month’s supply

There is also an ongoing supply issue with some strengths of funded Oestradiol patches (Estradot 75mcg). If you are impacted by this shortage, please talk with your health provider or pharmacist.
